In a strategic move to meet surging AI computing demand, Alpha Compute secures a 200-megawatt data center site with on-site power generation in northern Pennsylvania.
NEW YORK, Aug 11 (The Beat) - AI infrastructure company Alpha Compute has signed a binding term sheet to acquire land and natural gas rights in Pennsylvania for $55 million. The deal is aimed at developing a 200-megawatt data center campus, CEO Brittany Kaiser revealed in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday.
Surging demand for artificial intelligence computing has intensified the competition for reliable power supplies across the United States. Data center developers are increasingly opting to secure their own energy sources rather than waiting for grid connections, which can be slow and uncertain. Pennsylvania, with its abundant natural gas from the Marcellus shale basin, existing power infrastructure, and proximity to major East Coast population centers, has emerged as a prime location for new data centers.
The northern Pennsylvania site, which will include gas-fired power generation, is expected to begin operations in the third quarter of 2027. According to Kaiser, the facility could eventually be expanded to generate one gigawatt of power. The project combines data center development with natural gas production and on-site electricity generation, a strategy that is gaining traction as utilities struggle to meet the high energy demands of large AI facilities.
The acquisition includes undeveloped Marcellus gas rights covering about 1,800 mineral acres. This strategic move not only secures a reliable power source for the data center but also positions Alpha Compute to capitalize on the growing market for AI infrastructure. The deal is subject to due diligence, financing, permitting, and final agreements.

The investment in Pennsylvania aligns with broader trends in the tech industry, where major players are making significant commitments to expand their AI capabilities. Last year, Amazon announced a $20 billion investment in Pennsylvania to expand its cloud infrastructure, underscoring the state's appeal for data center development.
For Alpha Compute, this acquisition represents a substantial bet on the future of AI and the need for robust, scalable infrastructure. The company aims to leverage its new facility to support the growing demand for high-performance computing, particularly from sectors such as finance, healthcare, and autonomous vehicles. The integration of natural gas production and power generation could also offer cost advantages and operational flexibility.
The deal's financial terms and strategic implications highlight the increasing importance of vertical integration in the data center industry. By securing its own energy sources, Alpha Compute can better manage costs and ensure a stable supply of power, which is critical for maintaining high levels of service reliability and performance.
Alpha Compute's acquisition of land and gas rights in Pennsylvania reflects a forward-thinking approach to meeting the growing demand for AI computing. The company's strategic investment in on-site energy generation not only addresses immediate operational needs but also positions it well for future growth in a rapidly evolving market.
