In a strategic move to strengthen its presence in the Chinese market, Apple has developed a large language model tailored for local users, leveraging Alibaba's Qwen and Baidu technologies.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is taking a significant step in the global AI race by developing a China-specific large language model with support from Alibaba (HK:9988). This move marks a shift away from relying on domestic third-party models and aligns with Apple's strategy to launch Apple Intelligence in China, navigating strict local regulations and competing with Chinese tech giants like Huawei.
Three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Apple has partnered with Alibaba to develop this model. The collaboration was approved by China’s Cyberspace Administration last month, paving the way for the integration of Alibaba’s Qwen and Baidu technologies into Apple Intelligence on compatible devices in China. This dual-track approach will allow Apple to combine its proprietary technology with locally approved systems, ensuring regulatory compliance while maintaining control over user experience.
Apple's decision to develop a China-specific model is driven by several factors. Firstly, it gives the company greater control over its AI offerings, which is crucial as Apple prepares to roll out Apple Intelligence in the country. Secondly, it helps Apple navigate the stringent regulatory environment in China, where local laws require strict oversight of data and content.

Apple has already begun testing aspects of the partnership. Eligible Mac users in mainland China can now connect Alibaba’s Qwen service to Siri and Writing Tools, providing early insights into how the integration will function. This testing phase is crucial for ensuring that the model performs well and meets user expectations before a full rollout.
This move by Apple underscores the company's commitment to the Chinese market and its ability to adapt to local conditions while maintaining technological leadership. As AI continues to transform various industries, including advertising and content creation, Apple’s strategic partnership with Alibaba positions it well to compete in one of the world's largest tech markets.
