Big Tech companies are increasingly under scrutiny for their reliance on fossil fuels to power the rapid expansion of AI data centers. In April, protesters organized a "Tech Oligarchy Tour," visiting the Washington, D.C., offices of META, Microsoft, and Open AI before concluding at the Data Center World Conference. This event highlighted growing concerns about the environmental impact of data centers, which are now consuming more power than most countries. According to new research, global data center electricity use surpasses that of all but 10 countries and is projected to double over the next four years.
The shift back to fossil fuels by Big Tech companies is a stark reversal from their earlier commitments. In the early 2000s, tech giants like Google were pioneers in sustainable energy, leading the charge for renewable power sources. For investors, the shift back to fossil fuels by Big Tech presents both risks and opportunities.
