As antibiotic-resistant infections continue to rise, a new bipartisan bill aims to bolster research and development efforts to tackle this growing public health crisis.
Antibiotic-resistant superbugs pose a significant threat to public health, with over 2.8 million Americans infected annually and more than 35,000 dying from these resistant infections, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This grant aims to support rapid clinical trial participant recruitment, conduct outreach in community settings, improve diagnostics, and develop new antibiotic pairings. Senator Hassan highlighted the urgency of this legislation, noting that doctors often have to try multiple medications when treating patients with antibiotic-resistant infections, and in some cases, no treatment options exist. "Developing new antibiotics is a priority not just for the health of our people but for our national security," she said. "As we face the challenge of combating superbugs and defending against other outbreaks, our foreign adversaries are growing increasingly sophisticated in their own biotechnology. If the United States does not keep up with the science and innovation coming from countries like China, we risk falling behind and becoming reliant on critical new medications that are only available abroad."
The Joint Economic Committee (JEC) report, which cites CDC data, emphasizes that the estimated financial strain from antimicrobial resistance is likely an underestimate. The report underscores the need for comprehensive action to address this growing threat. "We've made incredible progress because of antibiotics," Hassan added, but the emergence of superbugs threatens to reverse these gains.
