As advanced AI models reshape cybersecurity, the Coalition for Health AI forms a work group to develop playbooks and tools that can protect healthcare organizations from sophisticated attacks.
The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping not just how we diagnose and treat patients but also how cyber threats are orchestrated. In response, the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) has launched a new Health AI Cybersecurity Work Group. This initiative aims to bring together IT security experts from healthcare organizations, tech companies, and industry bodies to develop comprehensive resources for defending against AI-driven attacks.
The work group will meet biweekly to create playbooks and a frontier AI cyber risk assessment tool, which CHAI plans to release by the end of 2026. These resources are designed to help health systems, payers, and health tech companies stay ahead of the evolving threat landscape.
Nearly 100 industry leaders are collaborating on this project, driven by the recent release of Anthropic’s Mythos-class frontier models, including the public Fable variant released on June 9, 2026. These advanced models can compress attack timelines and industrialize the exfiltration of protected health information (PHI) and ransomware attacks.
However, these same AI capabilities also offer unprecedented opportunities for cyber defense. According to CHAI, frontier models can enhance vulnerability management and incident response, providing healthcare organizations with powerful tools to protect sensitive data.

Errol Weiss, Chief Security Officer of Health-ISAC and a member of the work group's leadership council, emphasized the collaborative nature of this effort: "Health sector cybersecurity is a team sport. What makes CHAI’s Health AI Cybersecurity Work Group so important is that it brings together health systems, technology companies, and industry organizations to develop practical guidance we can all use to reduce risk before incidents occur."
Ed Gaudet, CEO and founder of the Boston-based security firm Censinet, also highlighted the importance of collective action: "Critical healthcare organizations shouldn’t have to tackle AI threats alone. Frontier-latest AI models are changing the speed, scale, and sophistication of cyber attacks, and we need a coordinated response to address these challenges."
The formation of this work group underscores the critical need for proactive and collaborative approaches in the face of evolving AI-driven cybersecurity threats. By pooling expertise and resources, the healthcare industry can better protect patient data and maintain trust in an increasingly digital world.
