As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms healthcare, a new set of governance playbooks aims to ensure its safe and ethical implementation across health systems.
The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) has released a series of detailed playbooks designed to guide health systems in implementing artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly. These playbooks offer practical advice and baseline controls to help organizations navigate the complexities of AI adoption, ensuring that these technologies are used safely, transparently, and consistently.
The rapid integration of AI into healthcare is driven by its potential to improve patient outcomes, streamline operations, and enhance decision-making. However, this surge in AI use also raises significant ethical, legal, and operational challenges. Health systems need clear guidelines to ensure that AI applications do not compromise patient safety or privacy.
CHAI’s playbooks cover eight critical areas of AI governance:
Each playbook includes implementation guidance, tools, resources, and examples tailored to the specific needs of healthcare organizations. CHAI emphasizes that these playbooks are meant to be flexible and adaptable, allowing organizations to tailor them to their unique contexts.
The development of these playbooks was a collaborative effort involving over 100 healthcare organizations. Workshops and multiple feedback sessions ensured that the guidelines reflect a wide range of perspectives and experiences. CHAI CEO Brian Anderson, M.D., highlighted the importance of this collaboration:

"Our working groups set out to tackle the challenge of providing practical, consistent, and comprehensive guidance for AI deployment. I'm encouraged by how much industry-wide collaboration occurred to deliver today's playbooks. These efforts don't just help define responsible AI; they make it usable for healthcare delivery organizations across the country-regardless of resource level."
The playbooks build on CHAI’s earlier work, including a document published last fall that laid the groundwork for this comprehensive framework. This ongoing commitment to responsible AI governance underscores the organization's dedication to ensuring that AI innovations translate into high-quality care for all patients.
As AI continues to reshape healthcare, the need for robust governance frameworks becomes increasingly urgent. CHAI’s playbooks offer a practical and flexible approach to navigating the ethical and operational challenges of AI adoption. By providing clear guidelines and resources, these playbooks empower health systems to harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding patient safety and privacy.
For patients, this means better care through more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans. For healthcare providers, it means streamlined operations and improved decision-making. And for the broader community, it means a healthcare system that is more efficient, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all stakeholders.
CHAI’s playbooks are available on their website, providing a valuable resource for health systems as they continue to integrate AI into their practices. With these guidelines in place, the future of healthcare looks brighter and more promising than ever.

About the author
Amara's entry point into AI was an epidemiology role at a London research hospital, where she spent five years studying how digital health tools reached — or conspicuously failed to reach — underserved communities. Watching early algorithmic systems in healthcare quietly entrench existing inequalities, she redirected her career toward the systemic consequences of AI at scale. She covers AI through an unflinching lens: who benefits, who bears the cost, and what evidence actually says versus what the press release claims. Her writing is calm and precise, but she doesn't mistake balance for neutrality.
