The high-stakes race to automate healthcare with artificial intelligence has left some customers and investors questioning the aggressive tactics of tech startup Commure.
The healthcare industry is at a crossroads, driven by the promise of artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline operations and improve patient outcomes. At the forefront of this technological revolution is Commure, a $7 billion startup that has been making waves with its ambitious plans to automate various aspects of healthcare management. However, behind the scenes, the company's aggressive sales tactics and rapid expansion have raised concerns among both investors and customers.
Founded in 2016, Commure has quickly become one of the most highly valued startups in the healthcare tech sector. The company's platform is designed to integrate with existing electronic health records (EHRs) and other systems, offering a suite of AI-driven tools to optimize workflows, reduce administrative burdens, and enhance data management. Despite its impressive valuation, Commure's rapid growth has been marked by internal turmoil and external criticism.
For this monthslong investigation, reporters obtained and reviewed internal company communications, legal filings, and customer contracts. They also spoke with over three dozen ex-employees, business partners, and current and former customers. The findings reveal a pattern of aggressive sales tactics and overly optimistic promises that have left some clients feeling misled.
One former employee, who requested anonymity due to non-disclosure agreements, described the company's sales approach as "aggressive and relentless." According to this source, Commure's sales team was under immense pressure to meet ambitious targets, often resorting to exaggerated claims about the capabilities of their AI tools. This pressure has reportedly led to a high turnover rate among sales staff and a growing number of dissatisfied customers.
A healthcare provider in the Midwest, who spoke on condition of anonymity, shared that Commure's initial pitch was "too good to be true." The provider signed a multi-year contract based on promises of significant cost savings and improved patient care. However, after implementation, the results fell short of expectations. "The system was clunky and required constant manual intervention," the provider said. "We felt like we were being sold a solution that wasn't fully baked."
These issues are not isolated incidents. Multiple sources indicated that Commure's rapid expansion has sometimes outpaced its ability to deliver on its promises. The company has been accused of overselling its AI capabilities and failing to provide adequate support for clients struggling with integration and training.

Despite the challenges, Commure continues to attract significant investment from venture capitalists (VCs) who see the potential in automating healthcare management. In 2023, the company raised $500 million in a Series D funding round, valuing it at $7 billion. Investors like Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz have bet big on Commure's vision of transforming the industry with AI.
However, the growing number of unhappy customers and internal issues could pose significant risks to the company's long-term prospects. According to a report by CB Insights, healthcare tech startups that fail to meet customer expectations often struggle to retain clients and secure additional funding. This could be particularly problematic for Commure as it seeks to scale its operations and expand into new markets.
Analysts at Bernstein Research noted in a recent report that while the potential of AI in healthcare is undeniable, investors should approach high-growth startups like Commure with caution. "The healthcare industry is complex and highly regulated," said Sarah Johnson, an analyst at Bernstein. "Startups need to demonstrate not only technological prowess but also a deep understanding of the regulatory landscape and the ability to deliver sustainable value to their customers."
For now, Commure remains focused on its mission to revolutionize healthcare management with AI. The company's leadership has acknowledged some of the challenges it faces and is working to address customer concerns. However, as the industry continues to evolve, the balance between innovation and reliability will be crucial for Commure's success.
The road ahead for Commure is fraught with both opportunities and risks. As the company navigates the complexities of healthcare automation, investors and customers alike will be watching closely to see if it can deliver on its ambitious promises.

He believes most market participants still underestimate AI's long-run deflationary effect on knowledge work.
