As Epic outlines its ambitious plans to integrate artificial intelligence into healthcare, recent leadership changes highlight the company’s unique approach to management and innovation.
At its annual Users Group Meeting (UGM) in Verona, Wisconsin, this week, Epic Systems Corporation outlined a bold vision for integrating advanced technology and artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare. The tech giant, known for its electronic health records (EHRs), is positioning itself as the operating system of the future healthcare landscape. However, recent leadership changes have also been on the minds of many attendees, raising questions about how these shifts will impact the company's strategic direction.
Epic’s strategy to become the go-to platform for AI in healthcare was a central theme at UGM. The company aims to leverage AI to enhance patient care, streamline workflows, and improve data management across health systems. Seth Howard, Epic’s executive vice president of research and development, emphasized that AI is not just a tool but a fundamental part of Epic's future.
"What we're building with AI is an ecosystem that will transform how healthcare operates," Howard said in an interview on the sidelines of UGM. "It's about making every interaction more efficient and effective, from patient care to administrative tasks."
However, the recent departure of Sumit Rana, Epic’s long-serving president, has cast a shadow over these ambitious plans. Rana announced he was stepping down last month for personal reasons after 28 years at the company, leaving behind a significant leadership vacuum. Rana was widely seen as CEO Judy Faulkner's potential successor, and his departure prompted speculation about the future direction of the company.
To address this gap, Epic has taken an unconventional approach by distributing Rana’s responsibilities among four executive leaders: Seth Howard, Mark Lipsky, Erv Walter, and Garrett Adams. Each will take on expanded roles within research and development (R&D).
Howard, a 19-year veteran at Epic, explained that the company's leadership philosophy is rooted in fostering unique career paths for its employees. "One of the things I really enjoy about Epic is the lack of predefined career ladders," he said. "Each employee invents their own pathway based on their strengths, interests, and what the company needs."
This approach to leadership development is a hallmark of Epic’s culture. The company focuses on growing leaders internally rather than hiring from outside. Howard noted that monthly staff meetings celebrate long-term employees, often marking 20-, 25-, and 30-year anniversaries. "We're always looking at how we can grow leaders around us," he added.
The transition also reflects Epic’s commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. In an industry where technology evolves rapidly, the company's strategy of distributing leadership responsibilities ensures that expertise is shared and developed across multiple areas. This approach not only mitigates risks associated with key person dependencies but also fosters a more resilient organizational structure.

Epic’s focus on AI extends beyond just technical capabilities; it aims to create an ecosystem where AI can seamlessly integrate into every aspect of healthcare delivery. The company is exploring various applications, including predictive analytics, personalized medicine, and automated workflows. For example, AI can help predict patient readmissions, identify high-risk patients, and optimize resource allocation.
Howard highlighted that one of the key challenges in implementing AI in healthcare is ensuring data privacy and security. "We are committed to building AI solutions that not only improve care but also protect patient information," he said. Epic’s approach involves working closely with health systems to understand their specific needs and develop customized solutions.
The company's AI strategy also aligns with broader industry trends. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced a pilot program to explore the use of AI in managing chronic conditions. This initiative, which aims to improve care coordination and reduce costs, underscores the growing importance of AI in healthcare policy and practice.
As Epic continues to navigate leadership changes and pursue its ambitious AI roadmap, the company’s unique approach to management and innovation will be closely watched. The success of these efforts could have far-reaching implications for the healthcare industry, influencing how technology is adopted and integrated into clinical settings.
The coming months will likely see Epic rolling out more AI-driven solutions and further refining its leadership structure. For healthcare professionals and patients alike, the promise of a more efficient, data-driven healthcare system holds significant potential to improve outcomes and enhance the overall patient experience.
Epic’s journey in this new era of healthcare technology is just beginning, and the company's ability to adapt and innovate will be crucial in shaping the future of healthcare.

About the author
Amara's entry point into AI was an epidemiology role at a London research hospital, where she spent five years studying how digital health tools reached — or conspicuously failed to reach — underserved communities. Watching early algorithmic systems in healthcare quietly entrench existing inequalities, she redirected her career toward the systemic consequences of AI at scale. She covers AI through an unflinching lens: who benefits, who bears the cost, and what evidence actually says versus what the press release claims. Her writing is calm and precise, but she doesn't mistake balance for neutrality.
