Nurses Nationwide Protest Palantir's AI Technology in Hospitals

Nurses across the United States are taking a stand against the integration of Palantir technology in hospitals, demanding immediate action from health systems and public officials. National Nurses United (NNU), the largest nursing union in the country, has organized protests in eight major cities, including Palo Alto, California; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; Portland, Maine; Asheville, North Carolina; Austin, Texas; and New Orleans.

The primary concern is Palantir's automated staffing systems, which nurses argue lack transparency and clinical oversight. These systems are designed to optimize scheduling and resource allocation but have sparked significant controversy over their impact on patient care and data privacy. Registered nurses, patients, and community allies gathered on August 27 to voice their concerns and call for a halt to the use of Palantir's technology in healthcare settings.

The Controversy Over Automated Staffing Systems

One of the key points of contention is HCA Healthcare's use of Timpani, an automated scheduling and staffing platform developed with Palantir technology. NNU argues that centralizing scheduling decisions through this software can exclude local managers and undermine clinical judgment, which is crucial for determining appropriate staffing levels on individual units.

HCA has defended its use of Timpani, stating that the platform uses employee preferences, competencies, scheduling rules, and other inputs to generate possible schedules. According to HCA, nurse leaders review and edit these schedules, ensuring that they align with clinical needs. A spokesperson for HCA-owned Mission Health told Asheville's 828 News Now, "Across HCA Healthcare, scheduling technology is used to reduce administrative work and help nursing leaders accommodate nurses' scheduling preferences. The tool is a resource used by nurse leaders and does not make scheduling decisions or use patient data."

However, NNU remains unconvinced. They argue that the lack of transparency in how these systems operate and the potential for data misuse pose significant risks to both patients and healthcare workers. The union has also raised concerns about MaineHealth's use of Palantir technology for analytics, citing a lack of disclosure regarding the scope of the relationship and safeguards governing patient data.
