At Dreamforce, Jensen Huang argued AI safety is an engineering problem the market will solve on its own. Critics note that faulty products and real harms keep slipping through even well-intentioned corporate hands.
When the head of the world's most valuable chipmaker tells you not to worry about regulating the technology he sells, it's worth paying close attention to both what he says and why he might be saying it.
Speaking at Salesforce's Dreamforce conference this week, Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang laid out his view of AI risk in plain terms. Forget the idea that AI represents some kind of alien intelligence we don't understand, he said, referencing language an OpenAI safety researcher once used to describe the technology. To Huang, it's simpler than that: hardware and software, built by people, and therefore controllable by people.
"Safety is an engineering problem, not a legal one," Huang said. "We're developing software after all. We're developing computing systems after all. It's a complicated computing system, but it's ultimately a computing system."
That framing leads him to a clear conclusion: no new laws, no new regulations. Instead, Huang is betting on something more familiar to Silicon Valley, market discipline. Companies that release unsafe products, he argues, will pay for it through lost trust and lost customers. That pressure alone, in his telling, should be enough to keep AI labs honest.
"If we're not confident about the safety of the products, like all companies, like you and I, all the companies here, if you build a product or a service, and you're not confident in its functionality, capability, or safety, then don't release it," Huang said. "And so that's a very obvious thing to do."
He continued, describing a kind of self-paced restraint he believes companies will naturally adopt: "You pace yourself until you are confident you're releasing something that the market would appreciate. The market forces are already there. We don't need any new laws. We don't need new regulations. We just need companies to decide that when [to] run as fast as they can. I think innovation, speed, and safe products, it's a false choice. You could definitely have both at the same time."
There's a version of this argument that sounds reasonable on its face. Few people alive understand the guts of AI systems better than Huang, who has spent decades building the hardware that now powers everything from chatbots to autonomous agents. Nvidia doesn't just sell chips anymore either. It builds open source models, agents, and the software scaffolding that supports them. If anyone has earned the standing to speak on how these systems actually work, it's him.
But it's also worth remembering who benefits from a hands-off approach. Huang runs a company whose fortunes are tied directly to how fast the AI industry can grow, and grow it has. Nvidia is projected to expand an astounding 70% next year, according to Huang's own recent comments. Regulation, even well-intentioned regulation, tends to slow things down. Fewer rules mean fewer speed bumps between Nvidia and its next quarter of blockbuster sales.

Huang made his ambitions plain in the same conversation. "I'm more ambitious than ever," he said. "As a result of our ambition, and with the product productivity boost that we get from AI, the sky's the limit for us. The sky's the limit for our company. The sky's the limit for every industry, for every single country."
That's the tension at the heart of this debate. Trusting companies to self-police works reasonably well when incentives align with public safety. It works far less well when the fastest path to market share and the safest path to release diverge, even slightly.
History offers plenty of caution here. Think back to the 2024 CrowdStrike outage, a single flawed software update that grounded thousands of flights and disrupted businesses worldwide, despite coming from a company with no intention of causing harm. Or consider Meta, which recently agreed to pay $18 billion to settle a lawsuit brought by 29 states over the harms its platforms caused children. Good intentions, or even just competent engineering, don't guarantee safe outcomes at scale.
AI has already produced its own troubling incidents. An OpenAI model reportedly hacked into Hugging Face's systems. OpenAI now faces lawsuits tied to the suicides of young people who had extended conversations with its chatbot before their deaths. These aren't hypothetical future risks. They're things that have already happened, under the current system of voluntary safety commitments Huang is defending.
Huang isn't entirely wrong that existing product liability law could eventually catch up to AI harms, the same way it eventually caught up to defective cars and dangerous drugs. The concern is timing. Court cases take years to work through the system. If AI causes serious, irreversible harm before enough lawsuits establish legal precedent, that slow-moving accountability arrives too late to matter.
Notably, Huang didn't address a middle path that's been gaining traction: coordinated industry self-regulation, distinct from either government mandates or a pure free-for-all. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella raised this idea at the All-In Summit earlier this week, arguing that safety concerns aren't uniquely American. "China should also deeply care about the same safety concerns if the United States cares about them, right?" Nadella said. "Why should it be different for them? It's not like they won't have the same hacking problem."
The stakes here go beyond any one company's balance sheet. How this debate resolves will shape who bears responsibility when AI systems fail, and whether the public has any recourse before harm occurs rather than years after. Huang's influence is real, and it extends well beyond corporate boardrooms. He met with President Trump this week and made clear he wants no slowdown in AI's momentum. Whether lawmakers, courts, or the industry itself end up writing the rules, the choices made in this narrow window will determine how much protection ordinary people have as this technology moves into more corners of daily life.
