As Sam Altman steps down from OpenAI, Mira Murati takes the helm as interim CEO, marking a pivotal shift in leadership for the influential AI company following a board review of internal communications.
On November 17, 2023, the board of directors at OpenAI, Inc. announced a significant leadership change that will shape the future direction of one of the world's leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies. Sam Altman, who has been a driving force behind OpenAI since its inception, is stepping down as CEO and leaving the board of directors. In his place, Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer, will serve as interim CEO, effective immediately.
This transition comes after a thorough review by the board, which concluded that Altman's communication with the board was not consistently transparent, impeding its ability to fulfill its governance responsibilities. The board stated, "We are grateful for Sam’s many contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI. However, we believe new leadership is necessary as we move forward."
Mira Murati, a key figure in OpenAI's evolution over the past five years, brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the company’s mission and operations. She has been instrumental in leading the company’s research, product development, and safety initiatives. Her role in AI governance and policy further positions her as an ideal candidate to guide OpenAI through this transitional period.
The board expressed strong confidence in Murati's leadership, stating, "As the leader of the company’s research, product, and safety functions, Mira is exceptionally qualified to step into the role of interim CEO. We have the utmost confidence in her ability to lead OpenAI during this transition period."
OpenAI was founded as a non-profit organization in 2015 with the mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all humanity. In 2019, the company restructured to allow for capital investment while maintaining its commitment to its core values and governance structure. The board is composed of OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, independent directors Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, technology entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner from the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology.

As part of this leadership transition, Greg Brockman, who has served as chairman of the board, will step down from his role but remain with the company in a different capacity, reporting to the interim CEO.
The decision by the board underscores their commitment to OpenAI’s mission. In their statement, they emphasized, "OpenAI was deliberately structured to advance our mission: to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all humanity. The board remains fully committed to serving this mission."
This leadership change marks a pivotal moment for OpenAI as it navigates the complex landscape of AI development and governance. Mira Murati’s appointment as interim CEO signals a continuation of the company’s dedication to ethical and responsible AI practices, while also opening the door for new perspectives and strategies in achieving its long-term goals.
The board is currently conducting a formal search to identify a permanent successor to lead OpenAI into the future. As the search progresses, Murati will focus on maintaining the company's momentum and ensuring that OpenAI continues to innovate and uphold its mission.

Amara's entry point into AI was an epidemiology role at a London research hospital, where she spent five years studying how digital health tools reached — or conspicuously failed to reach — underserved communities. Watching early algorithmic systems in healthcare quietly entrench existing inequalities, she redirected her career toward the systemic consequences of AI at scale. She covers AI through an unflinching lens: who benefits, who bears the cost, and what evidence actually says versus what the press release claims. Her writing is calm and precise, but she doesn't mistake balance for neutrality.
