OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research laboratory, has announced a significant pause in the development of its upcoming model, Astra, following internal evaluations that suggest it may meet the "Critical" threshold for cybersecurity capabilities under the company's Preparedness Framework. This decision highlights the increasing complexity and potential risks associated with highly advanced AI systems.
The Preparedness Framework, first published by OpenAI in December 2023, serves as a guide to identify and manage the emergence of critical capabilities in AI models. These capabilities include the ability to identify and develop functional zero-day exploits across various severity levels in hardened real-world systems without human intervention, or to devise and execute end-to-end novel cyberattack strategies against fortified targets based on high-level goals.
Recent internal evaluations of Astra have revealed significant advancements in agentic coding and cybersecurity. These findings, combined with expert assessments, have led OpenAI to conclude that it cannot rule out the possibility of Astra reaching the Critical cybersecurity threshold. Previous models, such as GPT-5.6-Sol, were evaluated at a High threshold, but Astra's preliminary performance is strong enough to warrant further scrutiny.
Under the Preparedness Framework, a model reaches the Critical level if it can autonomously identify and exploit vulnerabilities in critical systems or execute sophisticated cyberattacks without human assistance.
