Back in the early 2000s, before social media and smartphones, office humor often revolved around making fun of PowerPoint presentations. It was the Nickelback of office software-ubiquitous and widely loathed. One of the most famous spoofs from that era was Peter Norvig’s slide deck rendition of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. This parody highlighted a crucial point: form and substance are deeply intertwined, especially when it comes to conveying truth.
Every word in Lincoln’s 272-word oration fits so precisely with every other word that the speech feels like it could only have come into being in its exact form. Norvig's PowerPoint version was unexpected and funny because it subverted our expectations of how such a powerful speech should be presented. This highlights an important distinction: there is information, and then there is truth. The two are related but not identical.
In the gap between "information" and "truth," we find disciplines like rhetoric, aesthetics, and hermeneutics. These fields explore how form influences substance and how the presentation of ideas can shape their impact. This concept is particularly relevant in today’s AI landscape, where the form of data and models can significantly affect their performance and ethical implications.
A few weeks ago, before the Arday affair and the Hugging Face hack, a full Discourse Cycle erupted over Emily Wilson's translation of Homer’s The Odyssey. Critics focused on her choice to translate πολύτροπος as "complicated." This Greek word, composed of "poly" (many) and "tropos" (way or turn), has a range of meanings that Wilson distilled into a single evocative term. The controversy over this translation underscores the importance of form in conveying nuanced meaning.
In the AI world, similar debates arise around model architecture, data preprocessing, and even the presentation of results. For instance, Anthropic’s recent watermarking technique for detecting AI-generated text has sparked significant controversy. Critics argue that the method could be used to stigmatize or misidentify content, while supporters see it as a necessary step to combat misinformation.
