As Chinese labs surge ahead with larger, more performant models, the landscape of open-source AI is shifting dramatically. Here's what developers and researchers need to know.
In the fast-paced world of AI, a few months can feel like an eternity. Just a few months after our spring report, we're back with a deep dive into the state of open models as of August 2026. This analysis covers key trends from January to August and is backed by comprehensive data. The landscape has seen significant changes, particularly in the scale and performance of models.
Models and datasets on the Hugging Face (HF) hub continue their explosive growth. Public model repositories have expanded from 2.43 million to 2.96 million, while datasets have grown from 711,000 to 1 million. Spaces, which are interactive environments for running models, have increased from 1.00 million to 1.44 million. Despite this growth, the distribution remains highly skewed: approximately 85.6% of models have fewer than 200 lifetime downloads, and a mere 1.5% of repositories account for 99.2% of all downloads.
The traditional progression in AI model development has been disrupted. Labs typically start with smaller models and gradually scale up. However, several Chinese labs have skipped this gradual approach entirely, releasing some of the largest and most performant open models in 2026.
The chart below splits the labs into two camps:

This shift has significant implications for practitioners:
The rapid advancement of AI models brings both opportunities and challenges. Here are some key areas to keep an eye on:
The landscape of open-source AI is evolving rapidly, with Chinese labs leading the charge in model size and performance. While this presents exciting opportunities for innovation, it also raises important questions about security, ethics, and accessibility. Developers and researchers must stay informed and adapt to these changes to make the most of the latest advancements while addressing potential challenges.

About the author
Kai built ML infrastructure at a Bay Area startup before developing an obsession with transformer architectures and inference optimisation that eventually pulled him out of product work entirely. A stint at a compute research lab sharpened his instinct for what actually matters in a model release versus what is marketing. He writes from the inside — from the perspective of someone who has debugged the systems he is describing at three in the morning. He is allergic to hype and instinctively drawn to the unglamorous plumbing questions that everyone else skips over.
