Despite a surge in cloud revenue, Cerebras Systems' stock tumbles 9% after missing key estimates, raising doubts about its ability to compete with Nvidia.
Cerebras Systems (CBRS.O) saw its stock plummet over 9% in early trading on Thursday following mixed quarterly results. The company's cloud business quadrupled year-over-year, but a decline in hardware sales and adjusted gross margins below expectations have raised concerns about Cerebras' ability to challenge industry leader Nvidia (NVDA.O).
Cerebras, which went public in 2026 with an IPO price of $185, has been positioned as a potential challenger to Nvidia due to its AI chips business. However, the company's latest earnings report paints a more complex picture. Cloud revenue surged to $126 million from $31.5 million in the year-ago quarter, marking a significant shift in Cerebras' revenue streams. This growth was offset by a decline in hardware sales, which fell to $54.1 million from $70.3 million.
The mixed results have led analysts and investors to question whether Cerebras can maintain its momentum and execute on the rapid capacity build required to support its growth. Morgan Stanley noted that "execution remains the key debate given the scale and speed of the capacity build required to support the ramp." This sentiment is echoed by other analysts, who have cut their price targets for Cerebras.
The market's reaction to Cerebras' earnings report highlights the increasing scrutiny on AI-linked companies. Despite a strong run-up in shares driven by Big Tech's ballooning spending-expected to exceed $740 billion this year-investors are becoming more cautious. The decline in Cerebras' stock follows a 41% rise from its IPO price, fueled by high expectations for the company's AI chips.
Citi and Mizuho have both adjusted their price targets downward, with the median target implying an upside of 15% from the previous close. This suggests that while there is still potential for growth, investors are now more focused on execution and profitability.
The broader market performance also reflects this trend. Shares of Cisco Systems (CSCO.O) fell around 8% after its earnings report, further indicating that high expectations come with higher risks. As the AI sector continues to evolve, companies like Cerebras will need to demonstrate consistent growth and operational efficiency to maintain investor confidence.
For investors considering a stake in Cerebras or other AI-focused firms, the recent market movements highlight the importance of thorough due diligence. While the potential rewards are significant, the risks associated with rapid growth and intense competition should not be overlooked.
