As ChatGPT's user base balloons to 34% of U.S. Adults, Pew Research highlights a generational divide: half of young Americans now use the AI chatbot, underscoring its role in tech-savvy lifestyles.
In the two years since its release in November 2022, ChatGPT has become a household name for many Americans. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, the number of U.S. adults who have used this AI chatbot has roughly doubled from 2023 to 2025, reaching 34% of the adult population. This rapid adoption highlights both the growing interest in artificial intelligence and its integration into everyday life.
The survey reveals that younger adults are leading the charge in ChatGPT usage. A majority (58%) of those under 30 have used the chatbot, making it a significant part of their digital toolkit. However, the adoption is not limited to young people. Among older age groups, the numbers are lower but still notable: 27% of adults aged 30-49 and 16% of those aged 50 and above have also tried ChatGPT.
The applications of ChatGPT are diverse, reflecting its versatility in various aspects of life. Some users turn to it for entertainment, engaging in casual conversations or playing games. Others find practical uses, such as writing assistance, coding help, and even language translation. The chatbot's ability to generate human-like responses has made it a valuable tool for both personal and professional tasks.
However, the survey also indicates that many Americans are still cautious about using AI tools like ChatGPT. Among those who have not used it, 20% say they have heard nothing about it, suggesting a significant information gap. This lack of awareness could be due to limited exposure or skepticism about the technology's reliability and ethical implications.
Despite its growing popularity, there is still a substantial portion of the population that remains unaware of ChatGPT. The survey found that 66% of U.S. adults have not used the chatbot, with 20% having no knowledge of it at all. This highlights the need for more widespread education and information about AI tools to ensure that everyone can make informed decisions about their use.

The data also reveal some interesting demographic trends:
The rapid adoption of ChatGPT suggests that AI is becoming an increasingly integral part of daily life for many Americans. As the technology continues to evolve, it's crucial to address concerns about privacy, ethics, and accessibility. Ensuring that all segments of the population can benefit from AI tools while understanding their limitations is a key challenge moving forward.
ChatGPT's journey from a novel AI chatbot to a widely used tool in just two years underscores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. While its adoption has been significant, there is still room for growth and greater awareness. As we move into an era where AI plays a more prominent role, it's important to foster a balanced understanding of both the benefits and risks.

About the author
Amara's entry point into AI was an epidemiology role at a London research hospital, where she spent five years studying how digital health tools reached — or conspicuously failed to reach — underserved communities. Watching early algorithmic systems in healthcare quietly entrench existing inequalities, she redirected her career toward the systemic consequences of AI at scale. She covers AI through an unflinching lens: who benefits, who bears the cost, and what evidence actually says versus what the press release claims. Her writing is calm and precise, but she doesn't mistake balance for neutrality.
