In a candid address, CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz highlights key initiatives to make healthcare more affordable and combat widespread fraud, offering hope for long-term sustainability.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is optimistic about the potential to reduce healthcare costs in the United States. Speaking at the HFMA Annual Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, Dr. Oz emphasized that while challenges remain, there are significant opportunities to improve affordability and combat fraud.
“It’s not all rosy, but there’s some hope,” Dr. Oz said. “As a clinician, I know that having an opportunity to fix a problem gives more hope than thinking the issue is terminal. And we’re definitely not terminal.”
Dr. Oz outlined several key areas where CMS is focusing its efforts to make healthcare more affordable and sustainable. These initiatives aim to address both systemic issues and immediate concerns, with a focus on long-term benefits for patients and the healthcare system.
One of the most pressing issues Dr. Oz addressed is fraud within the Medicare program. He argued that eliminating fraud could double the trust fund’s lifespan without raising taxes. This is particularly significant given the recent large-scale fraud cases that have been uncovered by federal authorities.
Dr. Oz cited examples such as an outsized number of durable medical equipment suppliers in South Florida, a disproportionate share of the country’s hospices concentrated in Los Angeles, and inflated personal care services employment in New York and California. He explained that much of this fraud began during the COVID-19 pandemic when the federal government disbursed large amounts of money without robust tracking mechanisms.
“During Covid, we taught fraudsters that we’re going to give a lot of money away from the federal government, and we don’t really have a way of tracking it,” Dr. Oz remarked. “So, we can’t tell if you used it the right way, and we can’t get it back if you didn’t. This brought many new players into the health ecosystem who never thought of defrauding healthcare before.”
To combat this, CMS is implementing more stringent monitoring and enforcement measures to detect and prevent fraud. Dr. Oz emphasized that these efforts are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the Medicare program and ensuring that funds are used effectively to benefit patients.

Beyond combating fraud, CMS is also focusing on several initiatives to make healthcare more affordable for Americans. One such initiative is the Most Favored Nation (MFN) pricing policy, which requires pharmaceutical companies to charge Americans no more than what developed countries pay for the same medications. Dr. Oz projected that this policy will result in $600 billion in savings over 10 years.
Another significant step is the expansion of access to GLP-1 medications for Medicare beneficiaries with obesity-related conditions. Starting July 1, these beneficiaries will be able to access GLP-1 medications for just $50 per month. This move is expected to improve health outcomes and reduce long-term healthcare costs associated with obesity.
Dr. Oz also highlighted the importance of addressing administrative burdens on small practices. He noted that while small practices play a critical role in healthcare delivery, they are often overwhelmed by increasing administrative demands. “We need to support these practices so they can continue to provide high-quality care without being bogged down by paperwork,” he said.
The initiatives outlined by Dr. Oz have far-reaching implications for the U.S. Healthcare system and the patients it serves. By addressing fraud, reducing drug costs, and supporting small practices, CMS aims to create a more sustainable and affordable healthcare landscape. These efforts not only promise immediate relief for patients but also lay the groundwork for long-term improvements in public health.
The success of these initiatives will depend on effective implementation and ongoing monitoring. As Dr. Oz noted, the challenges are significant, but the potential benefits are even greater. By taking a proactive approach to healthcare affordability and integrity, CMS is working to ensure that all Americans have access to the care they need without the burden of excessive costs.
