A proposal by a European fertility organization aims to cap the number of children conceived from a single sperm donor, addressing ethical and emotional concerns.
Ties van der Meer, a 47-year-old man conceived through anonymous sperm donation at a private fertility clinic, has managed to track down one sibling. However, he remains uncertain about how many others might be out there. This uncertainty is not unique to Ties; some donor-conceived individuals have discovered they have tens or even hundreds of half-siblings.
The emotional and ethical implications of such large numbers of siblings conceived from a single donor are significant. “It does make you feel a bit mass-produced,” said one individual who found out they had 25 half-siblings. In response to these concerns, a European fertility organization has called for international limits on the number of children a single sperm donor can contribute to.
The proposal, put forth by a leading European fertility organization, aims to address several key issues:

The organization suggests capping the number of children per donor at 10, a limit that has been implemented in some countries but not universally. This cap aims to balance the needs of fertility clinics and families with the well-being of donor-conceived individuals.
While the proposal faces challenges, it represents an important step toward addressing the complex issues surrounding sperm donation and the rights of donor-conceived individuals. As technology continues to advance, finding a balance between innovation and ethical responsibility will be essential.
