As AI tools become ubiquitous in the workplace, a global competition is exploring how these technologies will transform teamwork and collaboration.
More than 200 academic teams from 156 universities submitted proposals to the AI for Organizations Grand Challenge, a joint initiative by Stanford HAI and Google DeepMind. The challenge aims to study how artificial intelligence (AI) will reshape organizational dynamics, team formation, and collaboration.
The competition invited scholars worldwide to submit innovative ideas across three categories: using AI to improve alignment within organizations, understanding the human impact of deploying AI in workplaces, and simulating team behavior with synthetic models. This initiative marks a significant step towards a broader public conversation on how organizations are evolving due to AI.
The winning submission came from Yankai Wang, a PhD student at Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB), and Professor Amir Goldberg, also from GSB. Their proposal focused on studying the "grammar" of coordination-how human interactions unfold in team settings. Coordination is a complex process that involves multiple interactions, and understanding its underlying patterns can provide valuable insights into how AI can enhance or disrupt these dynamics.

Melissa Valentine, HAI senior fellow and associate professor in the management science department at Stanford, emphasized the significance of this competition. "Collaborating with a frontier lab like Google DeepMind offers scholars a unique opportunity to explore how AI is reshaping the workplace," she said. "This marks the beginning of a broader conversation about organizational change."
The AI for Organizations Grand Challenge is part of a broader trend where researchers are increasingly focusing on the practical implications of AI in real-world settings. According to Sha Sajadieh, AI Index Lead at Stanford HAI, this competition aligns with ongoing efforts to understand and guide the responsible deployment of AI technologies.
As AI continues to permeate corporate life, understanding its impact on organizational structures and team dynamics is crucial. The insights gained from this challenge will not only inform academic research but also provide actionable guidance for organizations navigating the AI-driven future.
