As Google appoints Koray Kavukcuoglu as the new head of DeepMind, the tech giant faces a critical challenge in catching up with rivals OpenAI and Anthropic in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
Google is stepping up its efforts to catch up with competitors OpenAI and Anthropic by promoting Koray Kavukcuoglu to lead DeepMind, its AI research unit. Kavukcuoglu, previously the CTO of DeepMind and Google’s chief AI architect, will report directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and oversee the development of the Gemini model, frontier AI research, and developer tools.
The appointment comes at a time when OpenAI and Anthropic have been making significant strides in advancing AI capabilities. Both companies have released new systems that have garnered attention for their advanced functionalities, creating pressure on Google to accelerate its own AI initiatives. Since acquiring DeepMind in 2014, Google has not unveiled a frontier model since early 2026, despite the rapid pace of innovation in the industry.
Kavukcuoglu's promotion is seen as a strategic move to refocus Google’s efforts on improving the performance and practical applications of its AI models. According to Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, "The goal will undoubtedly be to close the gaps with Anthropic and OpenAI in some areas." This shift indicates a move away from purely academic projects toward more commercially viable and developer-friendly tools.
OpenAI's release of ChatGPT in 2022 set a new standard for AI performance, which Google aimed to match with the launch of Gemini 3 in November 2025. However, OpenAI and Anthropic have continued to innovate, releasing advanced systems that have both impressed and raised concerns about the ethical implications of AI.
Google's lag in this race has not gone unnoticed by investors and industry observers. The company’s stock (GOOGL) has been under pressure, down 0.76% (-0.22%) recently, reflecting market concerns over its ability to maintain a competitive edge in the AI sector.
For investors, the appointment of Kavukcuoglu signals Google's commitment to regaining its footing in the AI race. The focus on practical applications and developer tools could lead to new revenue streams and enhanced product offerings, which are crucial for maintaining market leadership.
However, the risks remain significant. OpenAI and Anthropic have established a strong foothold in the market, and catching up will require substantial investment and innovation. Google must also navigate the complex ethical and regulatory landscape surrounding AI development, ensuring that its advancements align with public and regulatory expectations.
The market's reaction to these developments will be closely watched. Investors will look for tangible progress from DeepMind under Kavukcuoglu’s leadership, such as new model releases and partnerships that demonstrate Google's commitment to leading the AI revolution.
While the road ahead is challenging, Google’s strategic moves suggest a renewed focus on closing the AI performance gap with OpenAI and Anthropic. The success of these efforts will have significant implications for both the company’s stock performance and its long-term competitive position in the tech industry.
