Tech-enabled primary care provider Hopscotch clinches a significant Series D funding round, aiming to address critical healthcare gaps in rural America by expanding into new markets.
Hopscotch Primary Care, a tech-driven healthcare provider focusing on underserved rural regions, has secured $53 million in a Series D funding round. The investment will fuel the company's expansion beyond its current core market in Western North Carolina, with plans to enter Tennessee and Georgia. Led by 8VC and Townhall Ventures, the round also attracted participation from Citi Impact Fund, Alumni Ventures, K2 HealthVentures, and the Autism Impact Fund.
Rural healthcare faces numerous challenges that hinder access to care, including a shortage of doctors, hospital closures, and long travel distances for routine appointments. Hopscotch addresses these issues by offering a patient-centric experience augmented with technology. CEO Tim Gronniger emphasizes the urgency of addressing rural healthcare gaps: "This is a problem that affects thousands of communities across the country with an aging population and significant migration into the Sun Belt. If not addressed, this issue will only worsen."
Hopscotch operates a dozen clinics, each offering longer primary care appointments ranging from 20 to 40 minutes. The company leverages ambient scribes to generate detailed visit summaries and patient instructions, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care. AI-driven clinical decision support tools further enhance the quality of care by helping clinicians manage complex cases more effectively. Telehealth options are also available, with some services provided in-house and others through partnerships with virtual specialty care providers.
The company's focus on a smooth and attentive patient experience is complemented by its commitment to retaining skilled healthcare professionals. Hopscotch prioritizes hiring clinicians from the regions where it operates, which helps in recruiting and retaining talent. An attractive compensation package, including potential relocation bonuses, further incentivizes doctors to join the team. Gronniger highlights the appeal for motivated physicians: "Working with a company that is ambitious enough to take big swings … and deliver outsize outcomes and patient improvement is exciting."

Hopscotch also explores public resources like loan forgiveness and government subsidies to support its providers. The company may apply for Rural Health Transformation Program funds where applicable, providing additional financial incentives for healthcare professionals. A team-based model ensures that doctors are not constantly on call, promoting a better work-life balance.
The $53 million funding round underscores the growing interest in tech-enabled solutions for rural healthcare. Investors recognize the potential of Hopscotch's model to address critical gaps and improve patient outcomes. The expansion into new markets like Tennessee and Georgia represents a strategic move to scale the company's impact while capturing growth opportunities.
For investors, the investment in Hopscotch aligns with broader trends in health-tech and venture capital. The focus on rural healthcare addresses a significant unmet need, supported by favorable demographic shifts such as population migration into the Sun Belt. As the aging population continues to grow, the demand for quality primary care services will only increase, making Hopscotch's approach both timely and promising.
Hopscotch Primary Care's successful funding round positions the company to expand its footprint and address critical healthcare challenges in rural America. The combination of technology-enhanced patient care and a strategic focus on clinician retention sets a strong foundation for sustainable growth and improved health outcomes.
