A new telehealth platform aims to make it easier for millions of Americans with age-related blurry near vision to access a recently FDA-approved treatment.
Telehealth is revolutionizing the way we access medical care, and now Lenz Therapeutics is bringing this convenience to eye health. The company has launched a new telehealth prescribing option for its aceclidine eye drop Vizz, designed to improve patient access to this medication for treating presbyopia. Presbyopia, often referred to as age-related farsightedness, affects millions of Americans, causing difficulty in seeing objects up close.
Consumers can now visit VIZZ.com, an integrated telehealth platform, to complete an online medical history form. This form helps determine their eligibility for Vizz based on their medical background. Once eligible, prescriptions are automatically routed and fulfilled by Lenz Therapeutics' e-pharmacy partner. The entire process is streamlined to make it as seamless as possible for patients.
The telehealth visit costs consumers $35, according to investment bank Leerink Partners in a flash note. This affordable option is particularly significant given that many of the 128 million Americans living with presbyopia may not visit an eye doctor annually. Eef Schimmelpennink, President and CEO of Lenz Therapeutics, emphasized the company's commitment to accessibility.
"Vizz continues to deliver the real-world efficacy we expected, and a telehealth platform provides a convenient option for the majority of Americans living with presbyopia who may not visit an eye doctor annually," Schimmelpennink said in a statement. "Through the launch of this platform, we are removing a key hurdle to product access."

Vizz is a 1.44% aceclidine solution that earned U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in August. The medication is specifically designed to treat presbyopia in adults, which is characterized by age-related blurry near vision. This condition can significantly impact daily activities such as reading, sewing, or using a smartphone.
To promote this new telehealth offering, Lenz Therapeutics has launched a national television advertising campaign featuring actress Sarah Jessica Parker. Parker first collaborated with the company in January for its "Make It Vizzable" campaign, which aimed to increase awareness and accessibility of the product.
The integration of telehealth into ophthalmology represents a significant step forward in patient care. By reducing barriers to access, this platform could potentially improve the quality of life for millions of Americans with presbyopia. However, it also raises questions about the long-term impact on traditional eye care practices and the need for continued regulatory oversight to ensure safety and efficacy.
As more telehealth options become available, it is crucial for both patients and healthcare providers to stay informed about the benefits and risks associated with these new technologies. The success of Vizz's telehealth platform will likely influence future developments in digital health and remote monitoring, potentially paving the way for more innovative solutions in eye care and beyond.
