Meta is reportedly in negotiations with several high-profile Hollywood stars, including Awkwafina, Judi Dench, and Keegan-Michael Key, to incorporate their voices into an upcoming AI digital assistant. According to Bloomberg and The New York Times, the company aims to secure the rights to use these celebrity voices across its various platforms, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and even the Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
The integration of celebrity voices into Meta's AI digital assistant, tentatively named MetaAI, represents a significant strategic move for the tech giant. By leveraging the appeal of well-known personalities, Meta seeks to enhance user engagement and differentiate its product from competitors like Siri and Google Assistant. SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors, has reportedly reached an agreement with Meta on terms. This follows last year's strike by SAG-AFTRA to establish provisions protecting actors from job loss due to AI. Under these terms, companies must pay actors and obtain their consent before using AI-generated likenesses. If Meta finalizes deals with the actors it is in talks with, it could pay them millions of dollars in fees.

Meta's ambition to launch this product by its Connect conference in September underscores the company's commitment to advancing AI applications. The event last year saw the introduction of a chatbot platform featuring 28 "characters" voiced by celebrities, including Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, Dwyane Wade, and Kendall Jenner. However, recent reports from The Information indicate that Meta has quietly scrapped this project due to lackluster user engagement.
Despite this setback, the potential for success with a more refined AI digital assistant remains significant.
