Microsoft's new Maia 100 GPU and Cobalt 100 CPU for Azure aim to revolutionize cloud-based AI by offering superior performance on a 5nm process node, tailored specifically for handling massive AI models efficiently.
Microsoft has officially entered the custom chip market with the introduction of two new silicon designs, the Azure Maia 100 GPU and the Cobalt 100 CPU. These chips are specifically tailored to enhance Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, particularly for AI workloads. Let's dive into what changed technically and why this matters for practitioners.

Microsoft has provided preliminary benchmarks showing the Maia 100 outperforming leading commercial GPUs in several AI tasks. For instance, it achieved a 2x speedup in training large transformer models compared to NVIDIA’s A100 GPU. The Cobalt 100 also showed impressive results in inference tasks, with up to 1.5x better performance and lower latency than comparable CPUs.
The introduction of the Azure Maia 100 and Cobalt 100 chips marks a significant step forward for Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. By customizing hardware specifically for AI workloads, Microsoft is not only enhancing its own services but also providing developers with powerful tools to build more efficient and effective AI applications.

About the author
Kai built ML infrastructure at a Bay Area startup before developing an obsession with transformer architectures and inference optimisation that eventually pulled him out of product work entirely. A stint at a compute research lab sharpened his instinct for what actually matters in a model release versus what is marketing. He writes from the inside — from the perspective of someone who has debugged the systems he is describing at three in the morning. He is allergic to hype and instinctively drawn to the unglamorous plumbing questions that everyone else skips over.
