The telescope is predicted to detect around 100,000 new exoplanets by observing how they distort the light of distant stars. This massive data set will provide crucial insights into planetary formation and evolution, potentially revealing more Earth-like worlds.

Coronagraphs are not new in space telescopes; Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope already use them. However, the Roman's coronagraph is a significant upgrade because it can actively adjust to block out a star’s blinding light. This adjustment allows for an unprecedented look at the space around stars, enabling scientists to see smaller, dimmer, and more closely orbiting exoplanets.
