A major investment by the OpenAI Foundation aims to double hepatitis C cure rates in eight states, using AI to bridge gaps between research and patient care.
The OpenAI Foundation has committed $100 million to a groundbreaking public health initiative with the Common Health Coalition. This partnership, known as the Breakthroughs to Follow-Through (B2F) Initiative, is designed to help state and local jurisdictions close critical discovery-to-delivery gaps in healthcare, starting with hepatitis C.
The initial focus of the B2F Initiative is ambitious: it aims to at least double hepatitis C cure rates over the next two years in eight states and localities. The first phase will target Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts, with an additional four jurisdictions to be announced within six months. This initiative represents a significant step forward in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to improve public health outcomes.
Scott Harris, M.D., the State Health Officer of Alabama, expressed enthusiasm for the project. "Our state is very fortunate to have this opportunity to improve the health of Alabamians living with hepatitis C," he said. "A cure is available for most people, but we often struggle to reach those who haven't been diagnosed or connected to care. This initiative brings together the necessary resources-people, partnerships, data, and technology-to close these gaps."
The funding will support the deployment of AI-enabled tools designed to identify patients who have fallen out of care, reduce administrative burden, strengthen care coordination, and improve patient outcomes. The Common Health Coalition, a multi-sector health collaborative, will work closely with local health departments, organizations, and community partners to implement these solutions.

Anna Makanju, Head of Civil Society and Philanthropy at the OpenAI Foundation, emphasized the initiative's alignment with the organization's mission. "This project reflects exactly the kind of work we were created for," she stated. "By leveraging AI, we can make significant strides in public health, ensuring that more people receive the care they need."
The B2F Initiative will provide technical assistance, implementation expertise, cross-jurisdiction learning, and evaluation to bolster local collaborations. This comprehensive approach is designed to ensure that AI tools are deployed responsibly and effectively, maximizing their impact on patient outcomes.
As the initiative expands beyond hepatitis C, it will tackle other critical public health issues such as HIV prevention and curable cancers. The organizations involved are committed to identifying new areas where AI can make a meaningful difference in improving health outcomes and reducing disparities.
The success of this initiative could serve as a model for future collaborations between tech companies and public health entities. By demonstrating the potential of AI to bridge gaps in healthcare, the B2F Initiative may inspire similar efforts worldwide, ultimately leading to healthier communities and better lives for millions of people.
