OpenAI's o1-preview marks a significant leap in AI reasoning, designed to tackle complex problems with deeper thought processes, setting new standards in fields such as science and coding.
September 12, 2024
OpenAI has just released the first in a new series of AI models designed to spend more time thinking before they respond. These models, named o1-preview, are specifically trained to reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems than previous iterations in fields like science, coding, and math.
The models are trained to spend more time on problem-solving, much like a human would. Here’s a breakdown of the training process:

OpenAI has also introduced a new safety training approach that leverages the models' reasoning capabilities. This ensures they adhere to safety and alignment guidelines more effectively:
OpenAI plans to release evaluations for the next update, which is currently in development. This will provide more insights into the model’s performance and potential applications.

About the author
Kai built ML infrastructure at a Bay Area startup before developing an obsession with transformer architectures and inference optimisation that eventually pulled him out of product work entirely. A stint at a compute research lab sharpened his instinct for what actually matters in a model release versus what is marketing. He writes from the inside — from the perspective of someone who has debugged the systems he is describing at three in the morning. He is allergic to hype and instinctively drawn to the unglamorous plumbing questions that everyone else skips over.
