OpenAI is gearing up to launch Group Chats in ChatGPT, enabling collaborative conversations with customizable AI settings-outpacing Microsoft's Copilot by offering more control over user interactions and chat dynamics.
OpenAI is set to introduce a Group Chats feature for ChatGPT, a significant update that will allow multiple users to engage in shared conversations within a single chat feed. This move aligns with Microsoft's recent introduction of group sessions in Copilot but goes further by offering additional controls for customizing the AI's behavior and managing user interactions.
Shared Conversation Feed: Users can now start a group chat, generate a link, and share it with others. This feed will display all messages from both users and the AI, creating a centralized space for collaboration.
Customizable System Prompts: One of the standout features is the ability to customize the system prompt for group discussions. This means you can set specific rules or contexts that the AI should follow during the conversation.
AI Response Management: OpenAI is introducing options to control when the AI should respond in group chats.
These new settings are designed to facilitate structured collaboration, making it easier for teams to coordinate, brainstorm, and solve problems in a unified workspace. The Group Chats feature addresses several limitations of separate, individual chats:

While Microsoft’s Copilot currently limits group features to basic user invites, OpenAI's approach offers more granular management over AI involvement and group behavior. This level of configurability is particularly appealing for professional and academic users who require tailored collaboration environments:
Given OpenAI’s history of clustering feature releases in December, especially during the “12 days of OpenAI” event, it's likely that Group Chats will roll out as part of this seasonal update cycle. The exact timing is yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to be available just before the end of the year.
The introduction of Group Chats with custom controls and enhanced collaboration features positions ChatGPT as a powerful tool for team productivity and group workflows. By providing more control over AI behavior and user interactions, OpenAI is addressing the needs of professional and academic users, potentially increasing the platform's utility and appeal.
