Users who missed GPT-4o's conversational finesse pressured OpenAI to reinstate it alongside GPT-5, giving subscribers choice amid model updates.
OpenAI has announced that it will reinstate GPT-4o as an option in ChatGPT, just one day after making GPT-5 the default model. The decision comes after a significant backlash from users who preferred the older version for its conversational nuances and overall usability.
For many practitioners and casual users, the transition from GPT-4o to GPT-5 was a step backward. While GPT-5 offers significant improvements in writing and coding capabilities, it seems to have lost some of the conversational depth that made GPT-4o so engaging.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the change on X (formerly Twitter):
“We will let Plus users choose to continue to use 4o. We will watch usage as we think about how long to offer legacy models for.”

This move indicates a more user-centric approach from OpenAI, acknowledging that not all improvements are universally appreciated and that user feedback is crucial in refining AI models.
The decision has been met with positive reactions from the community:
This reinstatement raises several questions about the future of AI models:
The reinstatement of GPT-4o in ChatGPT highlights the importance of user feedback in AI development. While technological advancements are crucial, they must be balanced with the needs and preferences of the users who interact with these systems daily.
