Sweetpea, OpenAI’s secretive audio gadget, aims to dethrone AirPods with its cutting-edge design and tech features, set for mass production by Foxconn in late 2028.
OpenAI’s “To-go” hardware project, initially shrouded in mystery, has now been confirmed to be a specialized audio product aimed at replacing Apple’s AirPods. Internally codenamed “Sweetpea,” this device is set to make waves in the consumer electronics market with its innovative design and advanced features.
Foxconn, one of the world's largest contract manufacturers, has been tasked with preparing for the production of a total of five devices by Q4 2028. While details about the other devices are still unclear, it’s known that a home-style device and a pen are also in consideration. However, Sweetpea is currently at the forefront due to its priority within the Johny Ive team. The release date is tentatively set for September, with an ambitious volume projection of 40-50 million units for the first year.
One of the most striking aspects of Sweetpea is its hardware design, described as “unique and unseen before.” The main device resembles a metallic eggstone shape, which houses two removable capsules. These capsules can be worn behind the ear, similar to traditional earbuds but with a distinctive twist.
Sweetpea’s hardware is powered by a 2nm smartphone-style chip, with Exynos being the leading contender. Additionally, a custom chip has been developed to enable the device to perform actions typically associated with an iPhone, such as commanding Siri.

The Bill of Materials (BOM) for Sweetpea is expected to be significantly higher than that of standard earbuds. This is due to the use of materials and components more akin to those found in smartphones, despite the device’s primary function being audio-related. The high BOM reflects the advanced features and robust build quality.
For Foxconn, this project represents a golden opportunity to reclaim lost ground in the earbud market. After losing all AirPods programs to Luxshare Precision Industry (立讯), Foxconn sees Sweetpea as a chance to reassert its dominance in the category.
OpenAI’s “Sweetpea” is poised to be a game-changer in the audio product space, combining unique design with advanced technology. With a strong manufacturing partner and ambitious production goals, it will be interesting to see how this device performs against established competitors like Apple’s AirPods.
