Surrey's PAI introduces NitroFusion, an AI model that creates near-instant images on everyday devices, breaking down barriers for those without access to powerful corporate servers and resources.
The University of Surrey's Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence (PAI) has announced the world's first AI model, NitroFusion, capable of near-instant image creation on consumer-grade hardware. This groundbreaking development democratizes access to advanced AI image generation, previously limited to corporate giants with vast computing resources.
NitroFusion stands out for its ability to generate images as the user types, eliminating the long wait times typical of most image generation platforms. The key technical advancements include:
Dynamic Adversarial Framework: NitroFusion employs a novel dynamic adversarial framework that functions like a panel of specialized art critics. Each "critic" evaluates different aspects of the generated image to ensure high quality in a single step.
Consumer-Grade Hardware: The model runs on a single consumer-grade graphics card (GPU), making it accessible to individual creators, small studios, and educational institutions.
The release of NitroFusion marks several significant advancements for both users and the industry:
Instant Image Generation: The model responds in real-time as users type their prompts, enabling rapid artistic iterations and greater control over the generated imagery.
Accessibility: With consumer-grade hardware requirements, NitroFusion makes advanced AI capabilities affordable for a broader audience.
Open Source: The model has been made open source by its developers at SketchX, a lab within PAI. This move encourages global innovation, adaptation, and the creation of variations.

Professor Yi-Zhe Song, Co-Director of the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI and Programme Lead of MSc in Artificial Intelligence, emphasized the transformative potential of NitroFusion:
"NitroFusion represents a paradigm shift in making AI accessible to everyone. It eliminates the need for large compute resources and long waiting times between prompt and result, which are common with most image generation platforms."
Dar-Yen Chen, a PhD researcher who helped develop the project at PAI, highlighted the technical innovations:
"NitroFusion leverages a novel dynamic adversarial framework that ensures high-quality images in a single step. The system's flexible architecture allows users to control the balance between speed and quality with up to four refinement steps."
Following last year’s release of DemoFusion, which provided a new way to upscale AI-generated images, NitroFusion further solidifies PAI's position at the forefront of making powerful AI technology accessible to all.
"We believe we're not just releasing another image generation model – we're pioneering an entirely new approach that democratizes AI interaction," added Professor Song.
NitroFusion is a significant step forward in AI image generation, offering instant creation capabilities on consumer-grade hardware. By making this technology open source and accessible, the Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence is empowering a wider range of creators to explore and innovate with advanced AI tools.
