In the world of modern social media, it's easy to forget the humble beginnings of online communication. Before the internet as we know it, Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs) were the primary way people connected and shared information digitally. These dial-up systems, which peaked in popularity during the 1980s and early 1990s, played a crucial role in shaping the social media landscape we see today.
Bulletin Board Systems emerged in the late 1970s as a way for computer enthusiasts to share files, messages, and information. Users would dial into a server using a modem, connecting through phone lines at speeds that seem glacial by today's standards (typically around 300 baud). Once connected, they could read and post messages, download software, and even play games.
BBSs were more than just technical curiosities; they fostered a sense of community among users. In an era before widespread internet access, these systems provided a platform for like-minded individuals to connect and collaborate.
