New Zealand's Tāmaki Health is rolling out an innovative 24/7 AI health coach, aiming to make preventive healthcare more accessible and reduce the need for in-person appointments.
In a world where access to quality healthcare can often be limited by time and location, private healthcare provider Tāmaki Health is taking a significant step forward. The organization has begun deploying an AI-powered health coaching service at selected clinics, marking what they claim to be a first-of-its-kind integration in New Zealand's primary healthcare system.
This 24/7 app-based service, called the AI Health Coach, aims to reduce the need for in-person appointments while making preventive healthcare more accessible. By leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), Tāmaki Health hopes to provide patients with personalized guidance and support, empowering them to take better control of their health and wellbeing.
The AI Health Coach acts as a "24/7 digital front door" for patients, allowing them to engage in health coaching conversations at any time-before, between, or after appointments. The AI uses information provided during these interactions to tailor practical, evidence-based guidance and action plans to each individual's goals, circumstances, and health concerns.
This tool is particularly designed to support lifestyle and behavior changes, helping patients create personalized action plans for conditions such as diabetes, gout, weight management, and anxiety. If a patient needs additional support due to the complexity of their condition, risk factors, or the need for personalized clinical advice, they can be referred to a human health coach or a clinical care team.
The AI Health Coach is powered by Groov, a company known for developing Ask Groov, which has been endorsed by Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand as the first AI-powered wellbeing guide for adults. Groov's platform is purpose-built for healthcare, incorporating clinically reviewed content, defined escalation pathways, and robust privacy, security, and governance controls. The platform has undergone privacy impact assessments and security testing and has achieved ISO 27001 certification.

The development of the AI Health Coach was a collaborative effort, co-designed with patients and Tāmaki Health clinicians and health coaches. This ensures that the tool is not only technologically advanced but also user-friendly and aligned with clinical best practices in conversation design, escalation pathways, action planning, and patient experience.
The potential impact of the AI Health Coach on patient care is significant. Early results from over 4,500 conversations conducted before the Tāmaki Health launch show promising outcomes. Users reported an average 32% increase in their confidence and capability to manage their health and wellbeing after a single coaching session. For those who continued engaging with the program, this increase reached approximately 75% by the second month.
These results highlight the AI Health Coach's ability to provide consistent support and motivation, which can be crucial for patients managing chronic conditions or making lifestyle changes. By reducing the need for in-person appointments, the service also has the potential to ease the burden on healthcare providers and make care more accessible to a broader population.
The integration of AI into primary healthcare aligns with broader trends in the medical field. AI, especially through machine learning and natural language processing, is making real-time processing of massive healthcare data possible. This can lead to improved patient outcomes, reduced no-show rates, and more efficient resource allocation.
In a world where healthcare resources are often stretched thin, innovative solutions like the AI Health Coach offer a promising path forward. By combining technology with human expertise, Tāmaki Health is setting a precedent for how healthcare providers can leverage AI to enhance patient care and improve health outcomes.
As this service rolls out, it will be crucial to monitor its impact on both patients and healthcare systems. The success of the AI Health Coach could pave the way for similar integrations in other regions, potentially transforming the landscape of preventive healthcare globally.

About the author
Amara's entry point into AI was an epidemiology role at a London research hospital, where she spent five years studying how digital health tools reached — or conspicuously failed to reach — underserved communities. Watching early algorithmic systems in healthcare quietly entrench existing inequalities, she redirected her career toward the systemic consequences of AI at scale. She covers AI through an unflinching lens: who benefits, who bears the cost, and what evidence actually says versus what the press release claims. Her writing is calm and precise, but she doesn't mistake balance for neutrality.
