As healthcare organizations increasingly rely on digital exchanges, new identity verification tools from Verato and Epic aim to streamline operations, enhance security, and promote interoperability.
This spring, several technology companies are rolling out advanced identity-verification solutions for both providers and patients. These tools are designed to better secure patient access, promote wider health data interoperability, and protect against fraud losses. Among the notable developments are Verato's shared identity network and Epic Systems' integration of IAL2-compliant patient-identity tools.
Verato has launched its new Identity Network (VIN), a centralized infrastructure that simplifies identity verification across healthcare organizations. Traditionally, each hospital or insurance company had to clean up its own database for accurate identity matching, a process that was both time-consuming and error-prone. VIN acts as a single, neutral utility layer, connecting providers and payers to a central hub.
"Identity is where platform strategy meets real operational impact," said Avi Mukherjee, Verato’s chief product and technology officer. "Organizations that solve this first will set the competitive standard." He emphasized that VIN creates a network effect, making it more robust as more participants join. This approach not only enhances accuracy but also helps organizations establish defensible positions as identity standards mature.
Epic Systems is also stepping up its game in patient identity verification. They have integrated IAL2-compliant tools from 1Kosmos and Vouched into MyChart, their widely used electronic health record (EHR) platform. These tools are designed to protect patient health information when users access their medical records or schedule appointments.
Zoom, another major player in digital communication, has added AI-driven human assurance to its video meetings. This feature uses machine learning to detect and mitigate potential security threats, ensuring that sensitive conversations remain private.

The practical implications of these new identity verification tools are significant for both healthcare providers and patients. For providers, streamlined identity verification can reduce administrative burdens, improve data accuracy, and enhance patient care. Patients benefit from more secure access to their health information, reduced risk of fraud, and a better overall user experience.
These advancements underscore the growing importance of robust identity verification in digital health exchanges, setting a new standard for security and interoperability in the healthcare industry.
