A strategic alliance between a leading health tech giant and a community health system aims to transform patient care through advanced imaging and co-developed AI tools.
In an effort to enhance patient care and streamline operations, WellSpan Health has entered into a seven-year strategic partnership with Philips. This collaboration will see the deployment of cutting-edge imaging technology across WellSpan’s network of 12 hospitals, diagnostic imaging centers, and ambulatory surgery centers in Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland. The alliance also includes plans to co-develop new artificial intelligence (AI) tools that promise to revolutionize healthcare delivery.
The partnership is a significant step for both organizations. Philips will serve as WellSpan’s preferred vendor for patient monitoring, enterprise informatics, and all applicable imaging modalities, including CT, MRI, digital X-ray, ultrasound, and image-guided therapy. This long-term commercial agreement includes a structured approach to technology lifecycle management, ensuring that equipment, services, training, and upgrade planning are aligned under a single, coordinated framework.
Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., President and CEO of WellSpan Health, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership. "This alliance with Philips fits broadly into our innovation strategy," she said. "We are committed to working more deeply with a select group of tech companies to ensure that we can streamline our health system, simplify processes for patients, and personalize care."
The collaboration marks Philips’s first research and innovation partnership with a U.S. Community health system. The two organizations plan to co-develop new products and features that will advance care delivery. WellSpan Health will serve as both a proving ground and a co-creator, leveraging Philips’ robust R&D pipeline to explore how AI and digital tools can improve throughput, reduce costs, and enhance workflow efficiency.

WellSpan has been actively engaged in innovation over the past five years, with a focus on culture and competence in deploying AI and technology. In September, WellSpan expanded its partnership with General Catalyst to test and scale AI technologies. The health system also collaborates with startups like Hippocratic AI and Aidoc, as well as Amazon Web Services for cloud and analytics solutions.
The strategic alliance between WellSpan Health and Philips is poised to set new standards in community healthcare. By integrating advanced imaging technology and co-developing innovative AI tools, the partnership aims to not only improve patient outcomes but also make healthcare more efficient and accessible. As this collaboration progresses, it will be crucial to monitor how these technologies are implemented and their impact on both patients and healthcare providers.
The success of this partnership could serve as a model for other community health systems looking to leverage technology to enhance care delivery. It underscores the growing importance of AI and digital tools in modern healthcare and highlights the potential for strategic collaborations between tech giants and healthcare organizations to drive meaningful change.

About the author
Amara's entry point into AI was an epidemiology role at a London research hospital, where she spent five years studying how digital health tools reached — or conspicuously failed to reach — underserved communities. Watching early algorithmic systems in healthcare quietly entrench existing inequalities, she redirected her career toward the systemic consequences of AI at scale. She covers AI through an unflinching lens: who benefits, who bears the cost, and what evidence actually says versus what the press release claims. Her writing is calm and precise, but she doesn't mistake balance for neutrality.
