As tech companies tout AI’s potential to combat climate change, new research warns that the same technology could significantly increase global emissions by enhancing fossil fuel production.
The promise of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing environmental challenges is often hailed as a game-changer. However, recent research from former Microsoft sustainability workers paints a concerning picture: AI could inadvertently exacerbate the very problem it aims to solve by boosting fossil fuel production. This contradiction highlights the complex interplay between technology and climate impact.
Published last week in the journal npj Climate Action, the study finds that AI's role in enhancing productivity within the oil and gas industry could lead to a significant increase in global energy emissions. The research estimates that this boost could add anywhere from Mexico’s yearly emissions at the low end to Russia’s, the world’s fourth-largest emitter, at the high end.
Will Alpine, one of the authors, explains that the relationship between tech companies and fossil fuels creates a "self-reinforcing effect between supply and demand." This dynamic means that as AI makes oil and gas extraction more efficient, it also increases global dependence on these resources, making it harder to meet climate targets.
Alpine and his wife, Holly, are former Microsoft sustainability workers who resigned at the start of 2024 due to the company’s continued collaboration with the fossil fuel industry. They have since become vocal advocates for addressing the issue of "enabled emissions"-the greenhouse gas pollution facilitated by AI tools.
Oil and gas companies have long used various forms of AI to optimize their operations, from finding new reserves to improving extraction efficiency. This technology-driven enhancement not only increases global reliance on fossil fuels but also complicates efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources.
While tech giants like Microsoft and Google measure their own operational emissions and those of their supply chains, they often overlook the enabled emissions generated by their tools. "Sustainability measures within tech companies are very much focused on operational emissions," Holly Alpine notes. This narrow focus fails to account for the broader environmental impact of their technologies.

The new paper argues that this oversight is critical because AI's benefits in developing solar, wind, and other clean technologies do not offset the increased emissions from fossil fuel production. These enabled emissions significantly outpace projections for emissions from the global data center buildout, which itself is a growing concern due to its reliance on fossil fuels.
The implications are far-reaching. A new Amazon data center in Texas, for example, could reportedly become one of the largest single sources of power consumption in the state, potentially driven by fossil fuels. This underscores the urgent need for tech companies to consider the full lifecycle impact of their AI tools.
The relationship between AI and fossil fuels is not just a technical issue; it has profound societal and environmental consequences. As the world grapples with the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the role of technology must be critically examined. The Alpines' research serves as a wake-up call for both tech companies and policymakers.
Tech companies have a responsibility to address enabled emissions by developing more transparent and comprehensive sustainability metrics. Policymakers, on the other hand, must consider regulations that account for the broader environmental impact of AI technologies. Public awareness and advocacy are also crucial in driving change.
The path forward is not without challenges, but it is essential. As Will Alpine puts it, "We cannot treat technology and fossil fuels independently; they are two sides of the same coin." By recognizing and addressing this interconnection, we can work towards a more sustainable future for all.
