As Alberta invests heavily in gas-powered AI data centers, residents are bracing for a spike in utility bills that could strain household budgets and raise environmental concerns.
Albertans have long faced the highest electricity rates in Canada, but a new wave of gas-powered AI data centers is set to drive costs even higher. The province's decision to build more natural gas plants to power these energy-intensive facilities has raised alarms among environmental advocates and consumer groups.
The Greenlight Electricity Centre, a proposed 932 MW natural gas plant north of Edmonton, is just one example of the infrastructure being developed to support Alberta’s growing tech sector. This facility alone would generate enough electricity to power a city two-thirds the size of Calgary, significantly increasing the province's demand for natural gas.
David Pickup, director of the Pembina Institute's Electricity program, warns that this new plant could have severe consequences for working families. "Adding a power plant of this magnitude will massively increase demand for gas in Alberta," he explains. "This is likely to mean higher household electricity costs for Albertans in the years ahead."
The impact of data centers on utility bills is not unique to Alberta. In the United States, grid giant PJM has announced that it will increase electricity costs by $6.3 billion across 13 states due to AI-driven demand. According to a statement from PJM, "Electricity demand is growing faster than new generation can be built to supply it. The primary driver of this growth is data centers."
Similar price shocks have been felt in other parts of the world. In Australia, increased LNG exports have inflated local gas prices used for electricity generation, leading to higher utility bills for households. Louisiana residents are also concerned about a new gas-fired Meta data center that could further strain their energy costs.

The rise in energy demand from data centers is part of a broader trend driven by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. These facilities require vast amounts of power to operate, often relying on fossil fuels like natural gas, which can exacerbate climate change and environmental degradation.
In Alberta, the provincial government has invested $50 million in AI innovation, with Premier Danielle Smith announcing the initiative alongside key ministers and industry leaders. While this investment aims to position Alberta as a leader in technology, it also raises questions about the long-term sustainability of such energy-intensive projects.
The surge in utility bills is not just an economic issue; it has significant social and environmental implications. Higher energy costs can disproportionately affect low-income households, forcing them to make difficult choices between essential expenses like heating and food. Increased reliance on natural gas for power generation contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, undermining efforts to combat climate change.
As Alberta and other regions continue to develop their tech sectors, it is crucial to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility. Policymakers must consider the long-term consequences of these decisions and explore more sustainable alternatives, such as renewable energy sources, to meet the growing demand for power without compromising the well-being of residents or the planet.
In the coming years, the choices made today will shape the future of energy consumption and environmental sustainability. It is up to all stakeholders-governments, businesses, and consumers-to ensure that technological advancements do not come at the expense of public welfare and ecological health.
