As extreme weather events become more frequent and intense, the ability to link these disasters to climate change is evolving. However, significant hurdles persist, with political pushback complicating progress.
Climate change has transformed our world, making extreme weather events like heat waves, droughts, and heavy rainfall more common and severe. These events have always occurred naturally, but the added energy from greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is tipping the scales. When a disaster strikes, people want to know: Was this caused by climate change?
According to a recent report from the US National Academies of Science, the field of climate attribution has made significant strides in answering these questions. Climate attribution science can now provide more reliable insights into how human activities are influencing specific weather events. However, challenges remain, and the fossil fuel industry is pushing back against this progress.
The stakes are high. Understanding the connection between extreme weather and climate change can inform everything from building codes to disaster preparedness. For example, if we know that a particular region is becoming more prone to heat waves due to climate change, we can design buildings with better insulation and cooling systems. This knowledge can save lives and reduce economic losses.
Climate attribution science works by comparing the frequency of specific weather patterns in two scenarios: one reflecting current conditions and another without human greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists identify the atmospheric features associated with an extreme event, then run climate models to see how often these features occur under both conditions. The difference between the two provides a measure of climate change's influence.
This approach has been through rigorous peer review and is now considered mainstream science. For instance, when Europe experienced a devastating heat wave in 2019, attribution studies found that such an event was at least five times more likely due to climate change. Similarly, the 2021 Pacific Northwest heat wave, which saw temperatures soar to unprecedented levels, was made 150 times more likely by human-caused warming.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has been a leader in this field, contributing significantly to the Fifth National Climate Assessment. This assessment includes detailed analyses of how climate change is affecting different regions of the United States, providing policymakers and communities with actionable information.

However, while attribution science has made great strides, it still faces limitations. One challenge is the need for high-resolution models that can capture local weather patterns accurately. Another is the difficulty in attributing specific types of extreme events, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, which are influenced by complex atmospheric dynamics.
The fossil fuel industry views advances in climate attribution with alarm. If it becomes easier to link extreme weather to human activities, companies could face increased liability for damages. This has led to a backlash, with some Republicans in Congress and state governments threatening the National Academies' funding.
For example, in June 2026, a group of Republican lawmakers introduced legislation that would cut funding for climate research at the National Academies. They argue that such research is biased and harmful to economic growth. However, this political pushback risks undermining the scientific progress needed to address the growing threats posed by climate change.
Despite these challenges, the importance of climate attribution science cannot be overstated. As extreme weather continues to outpace even our most pessimistic climate models, understanding its causes and impacts is crucial for building resilient communities. By continuing to refine and expand this field, we can better prepare for the future and protect public health and the environment.
In the end, the advancement of climate attribution science represents a critical step forward in our ability to respond to the urgent challenges of climate change. It provides a foundation for informed decision-making and underscores the need for collective action to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of a warming world.
