As tech giants expand their data center infrastructure, a new report reveals a dramatic increase in gas-fired power projects, raising concerns about environmental impact and sustainability.
The rapid expansion of data centers in the United States is driving a significant surge in gas-fired power generation, according to a recent report by Global Energy Monitor (GEM). This trend highlights the growing energy demands of the tech industry and its potential to undermine efforts to combat climate change. The findings show that the amount of gas-fired power in development for data centers has nearly doubled in less than a year.
Jenny Martos, a research analyst at GEM who worked on the report, emphasizes the interconnected nature of these developments: "Increasingly, the US gas power buildout is getting tied directly to the data center buildout-you can’t talk about one without the other." The implications are far-reaching, affecting both local communities and global climate goals.
In January, GEM reported that 97 gigawatts of gas projects were in development exclusively for data centers by the end of 2025. This was a substantial increase from just 4 gigawatts tracked in early 2024. Now, as of mid-2026, the demand pipeline has jumped to more than 189 gigawatts. To put this into perspective, one gigawatt can power roughly a million homes.
The tech industry's reliance on private fossil fuel plants, known as behind-the-meter plants, is a key factor in this surge. These facilities allow data center builders to bypass lengthy grid connection times and avoid potential rate hikes for consumers. However, the environmental cost of this approach is significant, as it contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions.
Over the past two years, tech companies have increasingly turned to these private power solutions. The Trump administration has encouraged this trend by introducing a voluntary pledge that has been signed by major players like Microsoft, Meta, Google, and OpenAI, as well as several Republican governors and some of the country's largest utilities. This support from policymakers has further accelerated the development of gas-fired power for data centers.
The environmental impact of these decisions is alarming. Data centers are not only energy-intensive but also contribute to local pollution and strain on natural resources. For example, in Texas, the rapid expansion of data centers could lead to a more than 50% increase in power costs by 2030, exacerbating issues of air quality and water usage.
Despite the growing reliance on gas-fired power, there is a push for renewable alternatives. Tech companies are under increasing pressure from environmental groups and consumers to adopt cleaner energy sources. Some have made commitments to reach net-zero emissions, but the implementation of these goals remains uneven.

For instance, Google has pledged to operate all its data centers on carbon-free energy by 2030. However, achieving this goal requires significant investment in renewable infrastructure and innovative storage solutions. The transition is further complicated by the intermittent nature of solar and wind power, which can be challenging to manage at the scale required for large data centers.
Renewable energy projects are also facing their own set of obstacles, including regulatory hurdles, grid integration issues, and community opposition. These challenges highlight the need for a coordinated approach that involves tech companies, policymakers, and environmental advocates working together to find sustainable solutions.
The surge in gas-fired power for data centers is not just an environmental issue; it has broader implications for energy policy, economic development, and public health. As data centers continue to expand, the demand for reliable and affordable electricity will only grow. This puts additional pressure on local grids and can lead to higher costs for consumers.
The environmental impact of these facilities extends beyond greenhouse gas emissions. The construction and operation of data centers can have significant effects on water usage, land use, and local ecosystems. For example, cooling systems in data centers require large amounts of water, which can strain local water resources, particularly in regions already facing water scarcity.
Addressing the energy demands of data centers is crucial for meeting national and international climate goals. The tech industry must take a leadership role in transitioning to renewable energy sources and implementing more efficient technologies. Policymakers also have a critical role to play by setting standards and incentives that promote sustainable practices.
Ultimately, finding a balance between technological advancement and environmental responsibility will require collaboration and innovation. As the demand for data services continues to grow, it is essential to ensure that this growth does not come at the expense of our planet's health.
