Epic is revolutionizing healthcare operations by integrating advanced scheduling, supply chain management, and ERP capabilities directly into its EHR system, aiming to streamline workflows and reduce costs.
Epic Systems, a leading provider of electronic health records (EHRs), is taking a significant step towards transforming healthcare operations with the launch of EpicOps. This new suite of tools aims to integrate financial, operational, and clinical data into a unified system, starting with advanced scheduling capabilities. The first application to roll out, Teamwork, focuses on clinician and staff scheduling, leveraging real-time data and AI-driven insights to optimize resource management.
Epic's vice president of EpicOps, Aparna Sridhar, highlighted the company's ambition to move beyond traditional EHRs by addressing complex operational challenges. "We're building a natively integrated ERP suite exclusively for healthcare," she said. "This will allow health systems to predict supply needs, manage workforce schedules, and optimize financial operations all within one platform."
Teamwork is designed to tackle the complexities of staff scheduling in healthcare settings, where manual and disconnected processes often lead to inefficiencies and delays. This module integrates seamlessly with Epic's existing EHR system, providing real-time updates and pattern-driven scheduling capabilities.

One of the key features of Teamwork is its integration with Epic's Cadence scheduling system. When a provider picks up a new clinic shift, Teamwork automatically opens appointment slots on the schedule. With Fast Pass, these slots can be offered to patients waiting for earlier appointments, reducing wait times and improving patient satisfaction.
"We used to have a significant lag time between when changes in provider availability were made and when they showed up on the on-call schedule," noted a representative from one of the five healthcare organizations currently live with Teamwork. "Now, everything is updated in real-time, which has greatly improved our ability to coordinate care."
Epic's move into supply chain management and ERP is part of a broader strategy to create a comprehensive platform for healthcare operations. With the initial success of Teamwork, the company is poised to continue expanding its capabilities, potentially setting new standards in the industry. As more organizations adopt these tools, the impact on healthcare efficiency and patient care could be significant.
