Google's NotebookLM gains audio versatility with the addition of Brief, Critique, and Debate modes, offering concise summaries and diverse discussion formats beyond its original Deep Dive feature.
Google is quietly rolling out new audio formats for its NotebookLM tool, adding Brief, Critique, and Debate modes to the existing Deep Dive option. These updates are currently hidden behind a feature flag but appear operational in production, hinting at an imminent public release.
The Brief format is designed for users who need rapid summaries. It provides a single-voice, two-to-three-minute audio segment that distills key points from provided sources. Unlike Deep Dive, which allows users to choose summary length, Brief remains fixed in duration. This mode is ideal for quick consumption of information without delving into extensive details.
Critique shifts the focus to feedback, featuring two AI hosts who analyze user-generated content such as blog posts or articles. They offer specific, actionable suggestions that can help content creators refine their work. The length is adjustable, ranging from a four-minute short version to a longer format. Early testing indicates that this mode is valuable not only for self-reflection but also for gaining a more critical perspective on material.
Debate introduces a conversational dynamic, with two hosts taking opposing sides on a topic. This feature allows users to feed in discussions about various subjects-such as AI advancements-and hear nuanced arguments from different perspectives. It's particularly useful for those interested in exploring multiple viewpoints or for educational purposes.
In addition to the new formats, NotebookLM is also testing more voice options. Currently, users have limited control over the AI voices in audio overviews, but these tests show that both additional male and female voices are being used for the new formats. The ability to choose or mix between different hosts would significantly broaden the tool's appeal and address a major user request since launch.

These updates address several key areas of user feedback:
