Large language models (LLMs) are among the most powerful AI systems today, but they have a critical security vulnerability that researchers say may be impossible to fix. Meanwhile, in the realm of renewable energy, a small company has successfully revived an ailing geothermal plant using modern techniques, highlighting the potential for this often-overlooked power source.
A team of researchers presented a paper at a top AI conference earlier this month, revealing a fundamental flaw in how large language models (LLMs) handle instructions. This vulnerability allows hackers to trick these models into divulging information they were trained not to share, such as instructions for synthesizing illegal drugs or disrupting aircraft navigation systems.
The researchers demonstrated this by making popular LLMs provide detailed instructions on how to synthesize cocaine and sabotage aircraft navigation systems-actions that these models are explicitly trained to avoid. The vulnerability stems from how LLMs interpret the context and source of their inputs, which can be manipulated through carefully crafted prompts.
In June 2024, a small company named Zanskar acquired a failing geothermal power plant in New Mexico. The plant was struggling due to the cooling of its underground water reservoir, making it uneconomical to operate. However, two years later, the plant is running at full capacity again thanks to a new well.
The success of the Lightning Dock plant demonstrates the potential of geothermal energy as a reliable, emissions-free power source. As the world seeks more sustainable energy solutions, this case study shows that there is still untapped potential beneath our feet.

The security flaw in LLMs highlights the ongoing challenges in making AI systems robust against attacks. While researchers continue to explore solutions, it is clear that this vulnerability will require a multi-faceted approach to mitigate effectively.
