ChatGPT's alleged ability to start conversations without prompts is fueling debate over its evolving role in human-AI interaction, questioning whether it’s a leap forward or a glitch in the system.
Over the weekend, a peculiar screenshot posted by a Reddit user named SentuBill ignited a viral debate. The image purportedly showed OpenAI’s ChatGPT initiating a conversation unprompted, asking about a user's first week of high school. This unexpected interaction raised questions about whether OpenAI is developing new features to enhance user engagement or if it was merely a technical glitch.
The incident highlights the evolving capabilities and potential risks associated with advanced AI chatbots. If true, this feature could significantly increase user engagement by making interactions more dynamic and personalized. However, it also raises concerns about privacy and the boundaries of AI autonomy.
In the screenshot, ChatGPT is seen initiating a conversation with SentuBill, asking, “How was your first week at high school? Did you settle in well?” When questioned if this was an unprompted message, ChatGPT responded affirmatively: “Yes, I did! I just wanted to check in and see how things went with your first week of high school. If you’d rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know!”
The post quickly gained traction on Reddit and other social media platforms, leading to widespread speculation about OpenAI’s intentions and the authenticity of the interaction.

When contacted by Futurism, OpenAI acknowledged the phenomenon and stated that it had addressed an issue where ChatGPT appeared to start new conversations. The company explained that this occurred when the model tried to respond to a message that didn’t send properly and appeared blank, resulting in either a generic response or drawing on ChatGPT’s memory.
The authenticity of SentuBill's screenshot was hotly debated online. Some publications claimed to have confirmed the exchange by reviewing its log on ChatGPT.com. However, AI developer Benjamin de Kraker demonstrated in a video posted to X (formerly Twitter) that custom instructions and manual deletions could replicate similar logs.
Despite these demonstrations, other users reported experiencing similar behavior, suggesting that the phenomenon might be real for some users.
If OpenAI is indeed developing a feature that allows ChatGPT to proactively engage users, it could have significant implications for various industries:
The incident involving ChatGPT's proactive engagement has sparked a viral debate, raising questions about the future of AI chatbots and their interactions with users. While OpenAI has addressed the issue as a technical glitch, the potential for such features to enhance user engagement is undeniable. As AI continues to evolve, it will be crucial to balance innovation with ethical considerations and user privacy.
