Samsung prepares to challenge giants like Google Assistant and Siri with an internally developed upgrade to Bixby, aiming to enhance user experience and strengthen its position in the AI-driven market.
Samsung is set to introduce a significantly enhanced version of its voice assistant, Bixby, later this year. The update will leverage the company's own artificial intelligence models, according to TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile division, in an interview with CNBC.
The upgraded Bixby represents a strategic move by Samsung to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. With digital assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT gaining widespread popularity, Samsung aims to capitalize on this trend by enhancing its own offerings. The new version of Bixby will integrate generative AI (Gen AI) capabilities, which can generate content such as answers to questions and images, powered by large language models (LLMs).
Bixby, first launched in 2017 with the Galaxy S8 smartphone, has been a part of Samsung’s device ecosystem for several years. The assistant offers a range of functions, including live translations, restaurant recommendations, and a Bixby Vision tool that provides information about objects captured through the phone's camera. The upcoming upgrade will enhance these capabilities by incorporating more sophisticated AI technologies.
While the introduction of an upgraded Bixby is promising, it also comes with several risks:

The potential benefits of the upgraded Bixby are substantial:
TM Roh emphasized that Samsung will continue to allow multiple voice assistants on its devices, maintaining flexibility for users who prefer other options like Google Assistant or Alexa. This approach could help mitigate the risk of alienating existing users while still promoting Bixby’s new features.
Samsung has not yet provided a specific launch date for the upgraded Bixby, but TM Roh confirmed that it will be available this year. The company has been working on the project for some time, with CNBC previously reporting on Samsung’s efforts to enhance Bixby with generative AI capabilities.
The upcoming release of an advanced version of Bixby is a significant step for Samsung in its AI strategy. By leveraging its own LLMs and Gen AI technology, Samsung aims to offer a more sophisticated and user-friendly voice assistant that can compete effectively in the market. While challenges remain, the potential benefits are clear, and the new Bixby could play a crucial role in Samsung’s broader push to integrate AI across its product lineup.
