As global events like the FIFA World Cup and Coldplay’s tours draw millions, new research highlights the significant environmental impact of fan travel, urging organizers to rethink their approach to sustainability.
The excitement surrounding major sporting and entertainment events is undeniable. From the FIFA World Cup to massive music tours, these gatherings bring people together, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. However, the joy of these events comes with a hidden cost: a significant carbon footprint that primarily stems from fan travel.
Last week, researchers from the University of Cambridge published a groundbreaking study in the journal Communications Sustainability, offering a new framework to evaluate the climate viability of mega-events. The study focused on two prominent events: the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Coldplay’s 2024 European tour. By weighing the consumer welfare gains against the emissions costs, the researchers uncovered startling insights into the environmental impact of these global spectacles.
According to the research, expanding the 2026 World Cup to a 48-team format is projected to increase total emissions by approximately 590,000 metric tons compared to the previous 32-team tournament. The estimated emissions for the entire event are expected to reach about 4.23 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Shockingly, 82 percent of these emissions are attributed to fan travel, with international travel alone accounting for around 3.07 million metric tons. To put this in perspective, the total emissions from the 2026 World Cup would be on par with Iceland’s annual emissions.
Professor Shaun Larcom from the University of Cambridge emphasized that effective climate strategies for mega-events must go beyond reducing operational emissions at venues. "This is only a fraction of the overall footprint," he explained in an announcement about the report’s findings. The study suggests that if the climate cost of these emissions were directly passed on to spectators, it would amount to an additional $114 per match ticket on average.
The impact of fan travel is not unique to the World Cup. Coldplay’s 2024 European tour, which will visit 10 cities and feature 32 shows with 1.9 million tickets sold, also faces significant emissions challenges. Without mitigation measures, the climate cost of the tour would amount to $11 per ticket on average. While the scale and distances traveled by fans differ from those of the World Cup, the underlying issue remains: fan travel is a major contributor to the carbon footprint of these events.

The University of Notre Dame’s research on wildfires provides additional context. In 2017, wildfires were found to be seven to 11 times larger than expected, releasing large amounts of climate pollution that could have been absorbed by forests over time. This highlights the broader environmental consequences of unchecked carbon emissions and underscores the importance of addressing the root causes.
The findings from the University of Cambridge’s study are a wake-up call for event organizers, policymakers, and fans alike. The scale of emissions from fan travel cannot be ignored if we are to make meaningful progress in the fight against climate change. Professor Larcom suggests that discounting tickets for fans who use more sustainable modes of transportation could be one way to reduce the environmental impact. Investing in carbon offset programs and promoting local events can help mitigate the footprint.
However, as the Australia Institute points out, relying solely on carbon offsets is akin to a smoker trying to cancel out the effects of smoking by walking at the same time. True sustainability requires a more holistic approach that addresses the root causes of emissions rather than just compensating for them.
As we look forward to future mega-events, it is crucial to prioritize climate viability in their planning and execution. By doing so, we can ensure that these events continue to bring people together while minimizing their impact on our planet. The choices we make today will shape the world for generations to come, and it is up to all of us to ensure that this legacy is a positive one.
