A groundbreaking partnership between Doctronic and the state of Utah aims to streamline prescription refills using artificial intelligence, addressing a critical healthcare issue that costs lives and billions annually.
It’s been seven months since artificial intelligence company Doctronic launched its automated prescription refill program in Utah. The initiative, which allows 30-, 60-, or 90-day renewals for medications already prescribed by licensed providers, is part of the state's regulatory relief program designed to foster innovation and improve patient care.
According to the mitigation agreement between the Office of AI Policy and Doctronic, the company has limited the types of medications to 191 commonly prescribed drugs, including psychiatric medications and birth control. Matt Pavelle, co-founder and co-CEO of Doctronic, emphasized the significant impact medication non-adherence has on public health.
“Medication non-adherence causes 125,000 preventable deaths annually in the U.S., and costs the healthcare system $100 billion,” Pavelle said. “About 30% of this problem is attributed to friction in the system-running out of refills, inability to afford medicine, or other logistical issues. We can at least solve one pain point in that system with AI.”
Utah was chosen as the state partner for several reasons, including its advanced AI sandbox and data-driven approach. Adam Oskowitz, M.D., co-CEO and co-founder of Doctronic, highlighted the state’s forward-thinking mindset and collaborative spirit.
“They have shown an aptitude for forward thinking and technology-friendly applications,” Oskowitz said. “Their data-driven approach aligned with our goals, making them the ideal partner for this pilot.”
Zach Boyd, Ph.D., Director of the Utah Office of AI Policy, explained that the program was created two years ago to enable the state to respond agilely as AI disrupts various industries. The regulatory relief program allows innovative solutions like Doctronic’s to be tested in a controlled environment.

“The law permits the office to work with companies to develop and test new technologies without being hindered by existing regulations,” Boyd said. “This approach ensures that we can evaluate the benefits and risks of AI applications before they are widely adopted.”
As the pilot program progresses, several key points will be closely monitored to ensure its success and safety. The primary focus will be on improving patient adherence and reducing administrative burdens for healthcare providers. The impact on prescription costs and the potential for misuse will be evaluated.
Doctronic’s AI system is designed to identify patients who are due for a refill and automatically generate a request to their provider. This process aims to reduce the time and effort required by both patients and healthcare professionals, ultimately leading to better health outcomes.
However, concerns about data privacy and security remain paramount. Doctronic has implemented robust safeguards to protect patient information, but ongoing oversight is crucial to maintaining trust and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
If successful, this pilot could serve as a model for other states looking to leverage AI in healthcare. The potential benefits are significant, from reducing preventable deaths to lowering healthcare costs and improving the overall quality of care.
