As Sumit Rana steps down, a quartet of top executives at Epic Systems will take on new responsibilities, signaling a significant shift in the company's leadership structure.
In a move that signals a pivotal moment for one of healthcare’s most influential companies, Epic Systems has announced a major leadership transition. President Sumit Rana, who has been with the company for three decades, is set to leave his post by August 14th. To fill the void, four key leaders-Seth Howard, Mark Lipsky, Erv Walter, and Garrett Adams-will assume additional responsibilities.
Rana's departure marks a significant change in Epic's leadership landscape. He had been widely seen as a potential successor to founder and CEO Judy Faulkner, who has led the company for nearly 50 years. In an email to staff, Faulkner emphasized the importance of internal growth and strong leadership continuity.
"Over our nearly 50-year history, Epic has excelled at identifying and growing strong leaders from within," Faulkner stated. "With Sumit’s recent news, a small group including Seth Howard, Mark Lipsky, Erv Walter, and Garrett Adams will be adding to their responsibilities."
The transition is more than just a change in leadership; it reflects a broader shift in the company's approach to management and growth. Rana's decision to step down was driven by personal reasons, particularly his commitment to family and elder care.
"Last November, my father passed away, and it has been a difficult time for our family," Rana wrote in a July 3rd email to all staff. "My mother lives in India, and this change will allow me to be present for her and help her navigate this tender chapter. It will also let me devote more of my time and my whole heart to my wife and kids."
Rana's departure leaves behind a legacy of significant contributions to Epic's research and development efforts. His tenure has been marked by the company's growth and innovation in electronic health records (EHRs), a sector that continues to evolve with the integration of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).

The appointment of Howard, Lipsky, Walter, and Adams underscores Epic’s commitment to maintaining its strong internal leadership pipeline. Each brings unique expertise and experience to their new roles:
The leadership changes at Epic Systems come at a time when the healthcare industry is undergoing rapid transformation. The integration of AI in medical billing, for instance, is reshaping how healthcare providers manage their revenue cycles. According to Isaac Kohane, MD, PhD, both clinicians and payers are increasingly adopting large-scale AI solutions.
However, this shift also comes with hidden risks. "The Hidden Risks of AI in Medical Billing: What Healthcare Leaders Must Know" highlights the importance of careful implementation and oversight to ensure that these technologies enhance rather than complicate healthcare processes.
For Epic Systems, the new leadership team will face the challenge of guiding the company through these technological advancements while maintaining its commitment to quality and innovation. The success of this transition will not only impact the company but also have broader implications for the healthcare industry as a whole.
As Rana prepares to step down, his legacy and the contributions of the incoming leaders will shape Epic's future direction. The coming months will be crucial in demonstrating how well the company can adapt to new leadership and continue its mission of improving healthcare through technology.

Amara's entry point into AI was an epidemiology role at a London research hospital, where she spent five years studying how digital health tools reached — or conspicuously failed to reach — underserved communities. Watching early algorithmic systems in healthcare quietly entrench existing inequalities, she redirected her career toward the systemic consequences of AI at scale. She covers AI through an unflinching lens: who benefits, who bears the cost, and what evidence actually says versus what the press release claims. Her writing is calm and precise, but she doesn't mistake balance for neutrality.
